One common approach involves attaching labels onto biomolecules and visualizing them during biomolecular interactions. However, these labels can sometimes physically adhere to the biomolecules and affect interactions in an unintended manner. Additionally, end-point assays like ELISA offer limited information on binding characteristics and may overlook weak or transient interactions due to the washing steps required.
Label-free biomolecular interaction analysis is a powerful alternative, especially for understanding molecular interactions between antibodies and their targets in real-time. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and biolayer interferometry (BLI) are two of the most widely used label-free techniques for studying protein-protein interactions, protein-small molecule interactions, and nucleic acid-protein interactions.
