Emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) can evolve into global healthcare crises or pandemics. This has been evident in the past with illnesses such as Lyme Disease, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Dengue Fever. Scientists have previously required years to develop effective vaccines or therapeutics to combat these emerging health threats. The use of high throughput technology can greatly broaden insights collected during discovery, augment the efficiency and safety of handling EIDs and shorten timelines. This publication provides an overview of the many lessons learned in virology, immunology and vaccine research during COVID-19 vaccine development – and its implications for global epidemiology.
