Application Note: Recovery of Burkholderia cepacia Complex Species Using Microsart® @filter
Authors: Nils Jäger, Meghana Pandomatti, Lokeshappa, Juliane Großmann | Last updated: March 2024
Overview
Due to its significant inherent resistance to numerous disinfectants and preservatives, coupled with its association to a range of human infections, the Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC) poses significant challenges to microbiological quality control in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors. Members of the BCC have been identified as one of the main contaminants for pharmaceutical or medical devices. This study demonstrates that Microsart® @filter CN and PVDF offer an effective solution for the robust detection and quantification of BCC during microbiological quality control.

Key Takeaways
- Recovery rates of BCC strains were equivalent to the traditional surface spread plate method when using Microsart® @filter CN or PVDF
- All tested BCC strains exhibited good growth on Microsart® @filter placed on both non-selective and selective media, independent of the media manufacturer
- Microsart® @filter products are highly effective for microbial testing of various aqueous, non-aqueous or aggressive solutions
