Density determination has a history dating back to ancient Greece. The famous scholar Archimedes (287-212 B.C.) was the first to define a method of measuring density by immersing a solid sample in water and then using the displayed liquid volume and a reference sample to determine the sample density.
Today, density measurement is an important part of quality control (QC) of raw materials and goods. While underlying principles remain the same, advanced instruments with guided protocols have simplified density measurement using buoyancy or displacement methods or pycnometers.
