Cheers to Easy Quality Control
Brew with Confidence - Spoilage Detection by Sartorius
The art of brewing and the science of microbiology are an interesting and dynamic partnership which has been centuries in the making, one cannot exist without the other. But besides brewer’s yeast there also lurk other microorganisms whose effects can cause detrimental changes in aroma and flavor and ultimately in the quality of the product. Any brewery, whether a craft, regional or multi-national, all share the same concerns that their product hits the shelf in prime condition and is safe for consumption.
Quality Control solutions by Sartorius help you focus on consumer safety and your own unique taste. Because taste is key.

During bottle filling, you need to be sure the bottling and packaging area is free of airborne spoilage bacteria to ensure the quality and shelf-stability of your beer. Timely detection of Pectinatus at this point can prevent off flavors and turbidity of your final product.
Air Monitoring
Before you move forward with bottle filling and packaging, you need to ensure your beer meets your own high-standards for flavor and aroma, as well as meets alcohol content standards. Our reliable sample preparation and analytical tools ensure your final beer product meets those standards.
Part of the unique flavor and aroma profile of your beer is the enhancers you add before filtration —but you can’t afford to introduce contaminants here. Test your enhancers for contamination with spoilage-inducing bacteria, like Lactobacillus and wild-type Pediococcus, and yeasts, like Brettanomyces.
Moisture Determination
Your most important quality control testing during beer production is your bright tank testing. We have the user friendly tools you need to carry out testing at this stage of the process, such as microbiology, HPLC, alcohol content, and aroma testing.
You know that testing your yeast slurry before fermentation is a smart move to keep your beer production on track and efficient. Trust your process by eliminating the risk your yeast is contaminated with spoilage bacteria, like Lactobacillus, or unintended yeast strains, like Brettanomyces.
At the beginning of your beer brewing process, testing the moisture content in barley and hops and the microbiological content in water can help safeguard the quality of your beer. Our sample preparation and analytical tools allow early detection to ensure your raw ingredients are free of bacteria and yeast strains that could lead to spoilage at this early stage.

Quality control of beer is essential for consumer safety. The water used for highly sensitive chromatographic analysis such as HPLC, GC-MS, or ICP must always be high quality. Arium® Mini lab water system is a compact ultrapure water system for labs with requirements up to 15 liters per day. The option UV lamp (185/254 nm) removes TOC levels down to < 5 ppb. Key advantages:
To ensure the quality of beer, samples are removed from production and tested. Standardized methods and filter paper grades are available for different applications including removal of turbidity from wort, removal of yeast cells after fermentation and reduction of CO² or to degas the sample prior to tests such as density measurement or specific gravity. Common filter paper grades for beer testing:
